The Story Behind the Tattoo: Peony

Peony tattoo

Peony tattoo

It's been a while since my last Story Behind the Tattoo. Since my last tattoo was heavy and emotional, I figured I would share one that was less heavy-hearted and more "fun." My peony tattoo is on the underside of my right arm; the same arm as my sleeve. Historically, peonies embody romance and prosperity and are regarded as an omen of good fortune and a happy marriage.

I got my peony right before we moved to Missouri. Right after we had gotten engaged and committed ourselves to spending our lives together, and right before we took a huge leap of faith and moved halfway across the country. A move that we hoped would bring us prosperity in our relationship, our careers and education, and our faith. And although we have only lived in Missouri a little over a year and are only in our 7th month of marriage, I would say we have achieved the things we hoped for. I know this has nothing to do with a silly little tattoo, and everything to do with Jesus, but oh is it a great reminder.

This tattoo was also done by the friend who did my sleeve. A friend who saw me go through a lot of things that no one should have to go through. A friend whose words and opinions meant a lot to me. A friend who I saw go through the birth of his twins and the split from their mother. This just adds that much more meaning to it.

Not to mention it's beautiful.

What's your favorite flower?

  1. I love this tattoo and your connection with the meaning. As of right now, i have 6 tattoos. I think I need to write a post about the meaning behind each one now. Thanks for the idea!

  17. They have a lot of different meanings depending on where you look but that seemed symbolic to me :)

  18. Beautiful. I love how your tattoos have special meaning behind them, it makes me think of the possibility of one more. My only fear is that I would tire of it, unlike a profile picture or desktop background I can't change it.

  19. Yeah- I wouldn't suggest making a hasty decision. BUT that being said, even if I do "tire" of mine, they're special because they remind me of where I was and what the meaning of it was then. The meanings of my tattoos have changed with me.

  21. I love these stories...and I love that your art has stories! If you're going to put something permanent on your body, it should have a story! :) This is a beautiful piece of art!

  22. I 100% agree with you- without a story, you will tire of it!

  26. What a beautiful tattoo! I am thinking of getting a California Golden Poppy tattoo to represent my home state of California and also my dad who passed away almost 4 years ago-- it was his favorite flower.
