Battle of the Dry Shampoo

The best and worst dry shampoos

I have this strange obsession with dry shampoo- and not only because I don't like to wash my hair. My hair is incredibly fine and becomes greasy within HOURS. Dry shampoo adds texture as well as volume to my hair, making it easier to style. Sometimes I will even take a shower, blow dry my hair, and still add dry shampoo- call me crazy.

My hunt for the best dry shampoo has been going on for a few years now. I have tried some stellar products as well as some total let-downs. Today I'm sharing my favorite (and least favorite) finds with you all. Each ranking is based on a combination of average price point and quality.

The best and worst dry shampoos
1. Tresemme Fresh Start ($5.99). I absolutely despise this dry shampoo. Although the price point is alright, it leaves your hair feeling even more nasty than before. It barely absorbs any oil and leaves behind a flaky residue that is difficult to conceal. Yuck.

2. Batiste ($7.99). Although not top-notch quality (it's just average), I love this product because they have a ton of options. You can choose your dry shampoo based on the fragrance you prefer, the color of your hair, or the style you are attempting to achieve. This one is particularly great for extremely oily hair.

3. One Love Organic Powder ($12.00). I have to be honest and admit that I have not tried this product yet, but I have been stalking it for a good year. It's on the higher end of the price range, but has a lot to offer. Instead of a spray, it comes in powder form. A lot of aerosols can leave my hair feeling "weighed down" and I have heard that this powder is a great way to eliminate that feeling.

4. Detox ($22.00). This one would be higher on the list if it wasn't so pricey. Although it is a great product, there are others that are less expensive. One thing I have read is that it is a great product for darker hair as it sprays in more of a beige color then a chalky white.

5. Big Sexy Hair ($10.99). This dry shampoo is great for adding volume but I think it could do a better job of absorbing oils. Some of the cheaper dry shampoos seem to eliminate more oil, but definitely do not achieve volume like this one does. It's one of those dry shampoos you might turn to for a night out on the town instead of an all day look.

6. Dove ($4.99). This is my ALL TIME FAVORITE drug store dry shampoo. It works just as well as some of the more expensive brands and doesn't leave my hair feeling chalky and weighed down like the other drug store brands. I also love the natural fragrance it has- not too heavy or artificial.

7. Indie Hair ($15.00). If I had the money to spend on nice dry shampoo all of the time, this would be my go-to. It's incredibly lightweight and you don't need to use very much of it.

Order your dry shampoo through Loxa Beauty and get $5 off your order of $25 or more when you use the code "SAGE5"!

  1. I have definitely jumped on the dry shampoo train. I have been using the dry shampoo by Suave. However, I am going to buy the one by BedHead this weekend b/c someone recommended it and let me try it this past weekend and it works pretty well and better than Suave.

  4. Ah, you'll have to let me know how you like it!

  5. Batiste is my favorite. I tried to tresseme one years and years ago & hated it! I would love to try the Sexy Hair one bc I love that brand! & I need to try the Dove one because, well.. it is super cheap! great post.

  6. You'll definitely have to give Dove a try! And I also love all things Sexy Hair

  7. I definitely will!

  8. We obviously have similar hair and I also have a dry shampoo obsession. I haven't tried Dove's version but its on my list!

  9. I couldn't agree more about treseme!!! I hate that one. I've been using the dove lately because well, budget... lol I'd love to try the higher end ones.

  10. Batiste has been my go-to for many months now, it has gotten to the point of I' m just so used to going out and buying a new one when need be that I don't even think about experimenting with other brands. I'll be picking up a bottle of the Dove option this weekend though!

  11. I love Batiste! I especially like it because they have it for dark hair.
I think I may try Dove next though... especially because it's cheaper!

  12. I tried the Tresemme and HATED it. Hate hate hate. My favorite so far has been "Not your Mama's" or "Not your Mother's" dry shampoo. I found it at Kroger and LOVE it. I use it mostly for texture and helping with teasing, but it doesn't leave the greasy feel.

  13. Right now I'm using Garnier, and I like it.. I used Aussie before this one and it's terrible, which is sad because I love Aussie products.. but it didn't absorb any oil and it made my hair have a thick "matte" texture. GROSS. I love Batiste too, because they make a brunette one, but it's hard to style my hair after using that one because it turns my fingers brown. And you can't sleep in it... it will tint your pillow case. Learned that one the hard way.

  14. I still haven't tried dry shampoo -- honestly my hair is SO greasy I just haven't even tried!!! I have to wash my hair everyday! I've tried a lot of the all natural shampoos too and those definitely don't work :(

  15. I haven't! A friend of mine swears by it and I just feel turned off because I'm worried it will feel heavy or flaky!

    ReplyDelete
  16. haha! Yeah I have heard Batiste is really great for dark hair, but I wouldn't know! Let me know what you think of Dove!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Isn't it gross?! Huh, I have never heard of that one! I use dry shampoo for styling purposes too!

    ReplyDelete
  18. I love Aussie too, but I have heard their dry shampoo isn't the best. The matte texture is soooo nasty. And YIKES about it turning your pillow case brown!!! That's horrible hahaha

  19. Girl my hair is like someone rubbed bacon grease in it most of the time and dry shampoo works wonders for me! I didn't think it would work when I first tried it, but once I found the right one for my hair and learned how to use it properly, everything changed hahaha

  20. This is awesome. I love dry shampoo - I use it for volume more than anything else. Have you ever tried the Suave stuff? It's my favorite. And costs like $2. The besttt. I think the worst one I've tried is the Herbal Essences one - it was weirdly kind of wet! (wtf?!)

    ReplyDelete
  21. Its actually amazing - it takes a little while to get the technique of sprinkling without dumping half the bottle on my head but it actually leaves less residue than some of the aeresols I've used.

  22. Ok. I've been stalking dry shampoos for a while now and I have yet to see the Dove one. Maybe I should try looking at CVS or Walgreens though.

  23. So funny, I woke up this morning and thought, "I wonder when Cassie is going to post the shampoo post" yay! You already know how I feel about the Dove Dry Shampoo, but now I will have to try the Indie!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Ok let's talk about dry shampoo some more because I was swearing by not your mama's but then they changed it and I HATE it. Goodness I hate it. There is one powder form I'm interested in, but I'm not sure about getting my hands all involved in the process because MORE OIL FROM THE HANDS. Ugh.

Also, Dove is currently my Go To (again) but I'm not in love. WHY WHY WHY?

Thanks for including me in here. You're the bombdigggity.

  25. I've used the Batiste in the past and loved it! I'm currently using (and trying to use up so that I don't have to anymore) Not Your Mama's... Totes not my fav! Once I finish this can, I'm going to try the Dove brand. Thank you for sharing this! I'm a dry shampoo fanatic!

  26. I'm surprised you and @Cassie Lee loved the Dove Dry Shampoo. I have that, but I don't think it does its work on me. While the fragrance is nice, my scalp tends to get itchy by the end of the day (if I applied it in the morning). That's an observation from using it for about three times since I got it. :(

    ReplyDelete
  27. Where has this been all my life?! I also hate Tresemme's dry shampoo. I've been using Suave (just okay), but I can't wait to try Dove! Thanks for these tips!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Oh darn! Sometimes mine will get slightly itchy by the end of the day (but that's usually when I'm washing it out so maybe that's why it doesn't bother me as much). Maybe one of the other ones would work better for your hair?! (Do you have sensitive skin? I wonder if that's what doing it)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Unfortunately, the Dove one's the only dry shampoo available at local stores here in Manila. :( I'll take note of the rest of @Cassie Lee's recommendations here for future use!

  30. Have you tried the Pssst brand (I got mine from Ulta)? It is fantastic! I also tried the Not Your Mother's kind and was not impressed.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Strange! Are you sure you're using it correctly? I wasn't using it correctly for a while and it did weird things to my head hahaha

    ReplyDelete
  32. YES! I heard the change was bad!!! Are you referring to the Lush powder form one? I'm also worried about applying with my hands.... and you are welcome!

  33. You'll have to let me know what you think of Dove!

  34. Hahaha I am here to aid your dry shampoo obsession. Let me know what you think of Dove!

  35. I haven't tried it! I have seen good reviews on it though.

  36. I keep reading about how much everyone just LOVES Dove's version, but it does terrible things for my hair. At that price point, I'm totally bummed out! I really really REALLY am having a love affair with my current one though - Bedhead Rockaholic! It's amazing! Love this post. So light-hearted and fun. Just my type. :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. How strange that you have had a bad experienced. So glad you enjoyed it! :)

    ReplyDelete
  38. ohhh i've always wondered about this! thanks for giving the break down so i can totally shower...i mean...wash my hair less :)

    ReplyDelete
  39. Yeah?! It's a little pricey for me but it is a good one!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I'm only here to help... uh aid in your cleanliness.

    ReplyDelete
  41. This is awesome! I've experimented with Tresemme, Big Sexy Hair and Dove! I'm currently using Dove and love the smell! I like BSH too but it's pricey. I couldn't find it for less than $16. I also got a great one in my Ipsy bag but the regular size is pricey. I'll stick with the Dove for now :)

    ReplyDelete
  42. So gross. I can't even begin to explain the yuck in my hair. haha. It's a good one. Its the driest one I have found. Most of the others have left a wet or oily feel.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I tried the NYM, and I can't figure out if I like it better than Dove. I've been wanting to try Pssst!

    ReplyDelete
  44. nice to know i don't have to spend a fortune to get a decent dry shampoo! :)

    ReplyDelete
  45. I know, right? I think I'm using it correctly as indicated in the directions. I haven't thrown it away, so I guess I'll give it another chance to prove me all wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  46. You'll have to let me know when you try it!

    ReplyDelete
  47. I use batiste a lot because it's cheap and does the trick, but you're right it is pretty chalky. I'll have to give some of these others a go. I don't nkrmally like dove because it makes my hair greasy but maybe their dry shampoo is different!

  48. Yeah- I'm not a huge Dove fan otherwise, but their dry shampoo is the best!

  49. I used to buy Batiste, when it was all I could find at Sally's Beauty--like 7 years ago. It always ran out so quickly.
Is the Big Sexy Hair an aerosol? I have their powder stuff, but it just doesn't do anything for me.
I COMPLETELY AGREE ABOUT DOVE. Smells great, great price, the bottle lasts a long time, and even with dark hair, it is fine for me! It's my go-to. It's forever sold out where I shop, so I stock up when it's in. Since I ran out, I've been using Pantene's, which I like because it is very clear going on, but it runs out quickly and does not smell as good as Dove. Dove, really is the best.
I haven't tried Indie Hair, but I might have to give it a try, if I ever have a reason to do anything but a ponytail. Right now, I just use the Dove to make my ponytails (along with bobby pins) to look a little fuller and not stick to my head haha.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Haha you're awesome. And yes BSH is aerosol! Yeah, I usually only use Indie if I'm trying to look nice- but I'm more of a pony tail person if I haven't washed my hair! Thanks for this awesome comment haha I loved hearing your thoughts!

  51. this is so good to know! i've been using tresemme, even though you're so right--it does leave my hair with weird gray/chalky streaks. i can't wait to try dove (the budget-friendly, quality one! :)
